Melania Trump Visits US-Mexico Border Again

Melania Trump Visits US-Mexico Border Again

"Do u?" the first lady is also said to have pressured her husband to change his hardline approach after images of distressed children attracted negative attention from the United States and around the world.

East Wing communications director Stephanie Grisham said the first lady's goal is to "learn and educate herself" about issues at the border, first hand, from those on the front lines and thank them for the sometimes risky work they do.

Grisham said the trip to Tucson was planned last week, after the first lady's trip to Texas was cut short due to flooding.

During the trip to McAllen, the first lady's choice of a jacket emblazoned with the words, "I REALLY DON'T CARE, DO U?" prompted controversy and speculation about its meaning.

Similar to her visit to Tucson, the first lady took part in a round table where she heard from officials at the Phoenix facility.

"The rhetoric we hear from the other side on this issue, as on many others, has become radicalized", Sessions said. Melania Trump donned sneakers, white trousers and a black sweater.

The decision provoked a storm of criticism and speculation as to whether it was directed at anyone from her husband, to the media to the children to no one at all, and spawned copy-cat jackets from people saying they did care.

After the short round-table discussion, the first lady was given a tour of the Southwest Key Campbell campus.

The controversial policy sought to enforce its policy calling for the prosecution of all immigrants who cross the U.S. -Mexico border illegally.

This time, Mrs. Trump travels amid upheaval over her husband's hard-line approach to immigration and evidence of increasing urgency over how that's playing out.

He reversed the policy last week with an executive order to halt family separations, followed by an order to immigration agencies and the Health and Human Services Department, which supervises detention of immigrant children, to reunify the families.

President Donald Trump was last week forced into a U-turn on separating migrant children from their parents, but about 2,000 children remained split from their parents, according to official figures released last weekend.

Within hours of these remarks, a Federal Judge in California ruled that the Trump administration must reunite all children separated from their families within 30 days, and all children under the age of five, within 14 days.
