Mexico wins again at World Cup, beats South Korea

The 2018 World Cup looks on course to set a new record for the number of penalties awarded.

Carlos Vela's penalty and a superbly-taken breakaway goal by Javier Hernandez gave Mexico a 2-1 World Cup Group F win over South Korea on Saturday which put them on the brink of a place in the last 16.

Mexico will advance to the last 16 for the seventh straight World Cup should Sweden beat Germany in Saturday's final game, which starts at 1 o'clock local time.

The win also piles the pressure on Germany as they prepare to face Sweden later today in Sochi, after the reigning champions' opening game defeat and the Swedes' opening victory over South Korea.

- In the first half, Son Heung-min had six shots (including blocked attempts) - more than South Korea managed in the entirety of their first match against Sweden.

"We didn't listen to the criticism", said Javier Hernandez, one of the scorers against South Korea.

Everything about this matchup suggests Mexico will win. Bet on Mexico to win.

The forward scored from the spot in the 26th minute after defender Jang Hyun-soo handled the ball while sliding to block an Andres Guardado cross.

Mexico had their second of the game in the 66th minute, however, when Hernandez collected a super pass from Lozano before finishing low into the bottom corner of the net to register his 50th global goal. Chicharito's first goal in the competition was the insurance marker his team eventually needed to vanquish South Korea.

Vela nearly turned provider two minutes later with a neat ball into Layun, but the former Watford man lashed his effort over from close range. Son Heung-min scored a fine curler in added time but it was too late.

South Korea wanted a penalty of their own after the restart when Moon Seon-min's strike clipped Carlos Salcedo's arm, but the referee correctly waved away their appeals.
