Mickelson throws 'putting tantrum' at US Open

Shinnecock Hills has not been kind to golfers this week at the 2018 U.S. Open, but Phil Mickelson suffered some self-inflicted damage Saturday.

Mickelson, who turned 48 years old Saturday, may have damaged his reputation for some avid fans after his moment of annoyance.

'I know it's a two-shot penalty hitting a moving ball.

"I played a lot better", said Mickelson, whow as on the ropes after a first-round 77. Taking his two-shot penalty, the extremely unusual incident divided viewers between those who condemned the action, and those who saw the amusing side of it.

Afterwards, Mickelson - who is now on +17 after three rounds at Shinnecock Hills - says he has long wanted to give up on a hole by hitting a moving ball.

He cited the 1995 US Open, also at Shinnecock, recalling that Neil Lancaster went out in benign morning conditions and shot an opening nine-hole score of 29 to thrust himself into contention. Daly was on No. 8 in the final round when he took an 11 on the hole and signed for an 81.

The start of that sequence was for bogey on the par-four 13th. The action stunned the commentators, and Mickelson's comeback put lipped out of the hole. It just got to him. And if that's the way people took it, I apologize to them, but that's not the way it was taken.

Phil Mickelson, needing only a US Open title to become the sixth man to complete the career Grand Slam, will still be gunning for the elusive victory this weekend.

The American shot a two-over 72 to end eight over, but told Sky Sports the USGA had "lost the golf course", meaning the course had become out of control and a lottery because of the rising wind and slippery green conditions compared with the morning when Daniel Berger and Tony Finau both shot 66.

Mickelson, who will have an early tee time, thinks a similar charge isn't out of the realm of possibility.

"It would mean an very bad lot, I want to be the sixth", Mickelson said before the tournament began.
