Minimum Wage Doesn’t Cover Rent Anywhere In The U.S.

Minimum Wage Doesn’t Cover Rent Anywhere In The U.S.

According to the report, a full-time worker earning $7.25, the national minimum wage, needs to work 122 hours a week every single week of the year to be able to afford your average, no-frills, two-bedroom rental in the United States.

The National Low Income Housing Coalition and the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in OH released a report today revealing that most OH jobs don't pay enough to cover the cost of rent.

Last year, New Orleanians needed to earn $18.54 an hour, the most in the state, to rent a two-bedroom apartment. The state's minimum wage is now set at $8.50 an hour. All of those counties are located in five states where the minimum wage is higher than the federal.

In California, the gap is even greater. Only registered nurses ($30.59) and customer-service representatives ($15.34) offer a housing wage, and customer-service representatives barely make the cut.

In Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo Counties, you'll need to make at least $60 an hour - as much as $90 in some zip codes.

According to the study, low-wage work is expected to grow over the next 10 years, but seven of the ten occupations are expected to provide a median wage that is lower than the housing wage. The average fair market rent in Arkansas is $720 and the minimum wage is $8.50, the report notes. As Cleveland continues to dig out of the housing crisis, it's important not just to look at the numbers from reports like the one from The National Low Income Housing Coalition, but also analyze and challenge the reasons why the numbers are what they are. The city is one of many now buckling under rising housing costs, Seattle's having been propelled in part by the same corporations that fought against the tax.

In Arkansas, for example, you only need to earn a little over $13 for a typical two-bedroom apartment.

"Wages are a big part of the problem", said Diane Yentel, president of the National Low Income Housing Coalition, on Wednesday in a press conference about the report.

The average fair market rent in Hawaii is $1,879, the most expensive in all 50 states.

In Ohio, the fair market rent (FMR) for a two-bedroom apartment is $793. And downsizing to a one-bedroom pad barely helps.

The findings are based on the standard budgeting concept of not spending more than 30 percent of one's income on housing.

According to the Joint Center for Housing Studies, the number of homes renting for $2,000 or more per month increased by 97 percent from 2005 to 2015. Ben Carson, secretary of Housing and Urban Development, has proposed raising rent for those getting housing subsidies. Bernie Sanders wrote in the report's preface. Already three out of four eligible households receive no assistance.
