Russia critic Browder says he's been arrested in Spain

Russia critic Browder says he's been arrested in Spain

But on Wednesday, Mr Browder tweeted that Spanish police had arrested him on a Russian Interpol arrest warrant.

"Browder had an worldwide arrest warrant issued by Russian Federation against him and that was the reason he was arrested", a Spanish National Police spokesperson told CNN. Spanish police soon released Mr. Browder because the appeal was no longer valid, said a spokesman for Spain's national police.

The Spanish police service said:...

"They won't tell me which station".

In December, a Russian court convicted Browder in absentia of deliberate bankruptcy and tax evasion and sentenced him to nine years in prison, Reuters reported, citing the country's general prosecutor.

The head of investment fund Hermitage Capital Management, Browder led a campaign to expose corruption and punish Russian officials he blames for the 2009 death of Sergei Magnitsky, who he employed as a lawyer.

Detailing the events on social media, Mr Browder wrote: "Urgent: Just was arrested by Spanish police in Madrid on a Russian Interpol arrest warrant. They want something in return", Browder told CBS News on Donald Trump Jr's meeting with a Russian lawyer in 2016.

In an FT editorial by Russian Federation chair David Clark published at the time, he noted that Prokopchuk's appointment was "extraordinary, not least because Russia has become notorious for its abuse of the Interpol Red Notice system that entitles member states to have named suspects arrested anywhere in the world pending extradition to their own jurisdiction".

"Vladimir Putin and the Russian government are absolutely infuriated that we are bringing them to justice for the murder of Sergei Magnitsky", U.S. -born and London-based investor William Browder told The Associated Press.

"There is not, and never has been, a Red Notice for Mr Bill Browder".

In an image of a detention report posted by Browder himself on Twitter, police identified the reason for the detention as "fraud".

Browder was detained by Spanish police Wednesday on a Russian warrant, which authorities later said had expired. He renounced his American citizenship in 1998 to avoid having to pay United States taxes, and became a British citizen.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson tweeted Wednesday that he was "very glad" Browder had been released.

Interpol had previously refused to enforce a similar 2013 sentence for Mr Browder, deeming it "predominantly political in nature".

"Browder is not wanted via Interpol channels".
