Two List A records on the same day

Two List A records on the same day

The hosts smashed a world-record 481-6 in their 50 overs, the highest one-day global (ODI) total in history, before taking just 37 overs to dismiss the Aussies for 239. Thanks to twin tons by Alex Hales (147) and Jonny Bairstow (139) England managed to score 481 in their stipulated 50 overs.

Captain Eoin Morgan joined in the fun as he struck a 21-ball half century.

3 - Century-plus partnerships in the England innings (Roy-Bairstow, Bairstow-Hales and Hales-Morgan).

For Australia it was the stuff of which nightmares are made, and Andrew Tye was made to suffer more than anyone.

Brisbane Courier-Mail newspaper: "England has heaped further humiliation on an Australian one-day team in freefall..."

Chasing the mammoth total was never going to be easy and the feat proved too much for Australia who were bowled out for 239 to slump to their biggest ever margin of defeat - usurping a 206-run loss to New Zealand in Adelaide 32 years ago. The 31-year old now scored a record 5443 runs for England in his 6187 ODI runs.

This was England's biggest win over Australia in the history of ODIs.

There was no let-up in the astonishing run-rate, however, as Bairstow - who had two scares, overturning an lbw verdict against him on 27 and then escaping a very hard chance to Marcus Stoinis at deep mid-off three runs later - powered on to a 69-ball century.

Only details remained - and they all favoured world number ones England who can therefore contemplate the possibility of a first 5-0 ODI whitewash of their Ashes rivals.

"It's just a case of relaxing and watching the ball".

England captain Eoin Morgan: "It's as close as we've ever been to a ideal day".

"Just woke up and saw the score in England". The visitors will need to reverse history as only twice have teams breached the 400-run mark whilst batting second in ODIs. And after Short chipped one to mid-on, Head poked a return catch to Moeen Ali and Shaun Marsh lofted to long-on.

"Sometimes you've just got to accept what you've got and be ultra-defensive from the start, put a few more fielders in front of the batsman's face and see if you can create a bit of pressure that way". "Their top three are brutal".

"The wicket was still terrific when we batted on it as well".
