All eyes now fixed on Kavanaugh and Roe

All eyes now fixed on Kavanaugh and Roe

"I expect Kavanaugh will be very much in the mold of Chief Justice Roberts, who has generally been friendly to business", Russell Wheeler, a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution.

Speaking at the White House, Kavanaugh pledged to preserve the Constitution and said that "a judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law". A CNN article published Monday said Cramer had asked the president not to make "some sort of affirmative action pick".

Baldwin added on Thursday that she did not have "confidence" that Kavanaugh would stand up to special interests.

So what does this mean if the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling were to be overturned?

"There's so many groups on the left declaring war on President Trump's nominee, even before they knew who he was", Graham said in a video posted to his Twitter feed Tuesday. "I don't think that's what Donald Trump thinks", Sanders said, arguing that the traditional deference, the tap-dancing around the edges of the nominee's politics, would amount to surrender at this stage.

Kavanaugh's views on presidential power and abortion are expected to draw particular attention in his confirmation hearing.

McConnell, who has been influential in shaping Trump's remaking of the judiciary, said, "What we'd like to see is a few open minds about this extraordinary talent". Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of the conservative Susan B. Anthony List, told reporters on a press call that the nomination of a fifth conservative justice is the culmination of years of work getting Republicans elected to all branches of government.

Kennedy broke some of the court's most monumental liberal-conservative ties, the most recent of which included decisions on the president's travel ban, labor unions and anti-abortion pregnancy centers.

Still, if Kavanaugh is confirmed, he won't likely change the outcome of many business cases before the Supreme Court.

"As a point of comparison, look at Bob Casey who is also up for re-election in the Trump-won state of Pennsylvania". Democrats and abortion rights activists have sounded the alarms on Kavanaugh, whose judicial record indicates that he does not support abortion. Since 2006, he has been a judge on the federal appeals court in Washington.

NBC News reported that the Trump team was in talks with Kennedy about his replacement for months and he only felt comfortable retiring after he "received assurance that it would be Kavanaugh", per NBC reporter Geoff Bennett.

Baldwin's opposition came after Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY joined all of the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this week and asked Americans to rise up against Kavanaugh's nomination.

Trump's success in confirming conservative judges, as well as a Supreme Court justice, has cheered Republicans amid concerns about his limited policy achievements and chaotic management style.
