Amazon workers strike in Europe to coincide with Prime Day

Amazon workers strike in Europe to coincide with Prime Day

Amazon launched Prime Day in 2015 and by 2017 it was its second biggest shopping day, topped only by Cyber Monday.

Despite initial technical glitches, sales eventually climbed, with the company's stock soon jumping 1.2%.

Twitter lit up with screen shots of Amazon's Prime Day failures, which featured photos of dogs and the words "sorry". "Companies like Amazon, Apple and Disney have shown that building an emotional connection with customers comes from not focusing on the conversion, but instead improving the overall customer journey and removing friction points through new products and technology". To access the discounts customers in Australia could sign up for Amazon's 30-day free trial, and then join Prime for AUD$6.99 a month or save 30 per cent with an annual payment of AUD$59. But with local Prime Day deals available to Australian shoppers for the first time this year, some wonder whether the event holds the same appeal in Australia as Amazon's home market of the US.

Amazon's annual 36-hour shopathon, an important marketing tool as well as a boost to business, had been expected to drum up $3.4 billion of spending - up more than 40 percent from a year ago - as bargain-hunters chase promotions and discounts.

Aussie Prime members joined 16 other countries for the 36 hour sales event, featuring several highly discounted items and timed "flash sales".

DownDetector.com, which tracks outages, most of the outages are centred on the US. Large and small retailers see a "sizable spike" in sales.

Prime Day has been instrumental in growing Prime's Membership ranks since its inception. That impression may be lasting, and the frustration could prompt some of them to check out competitors' sites during this sale event and on future shopping occasions.

How does Prime Day work? It was poor timing for marketing department bragging.

As far as specific statistics go, Amazon has shared some pretty interesting information. Bot attacks are common on retail sites during big promotions, and Amazon featured a lot of "captchas" used to distinguish humans from robots during the sale, an indication it was fending off bot traffic, he said. Nordstrom apologized to customers and also promised them something to make up for the inconvenience. She noted the problems affected Amazon's conversion rate, or how many people bought an item when they came to the site.

Amazon prides itself on being leaps and bounds ahead of traditional retailers at all things digital.
