Ancient Egyptian sarcophagus opened in Alexandria

Ancient Egyptian sarcophagus opened in Alexandria

The contents of the sarcophagus have been the subject of intense speculation since the relic was uncovered earlier this month.

The ministry said it was likely that sewage water had seeped through a fracture in the coffin.

Earlier, it was speculated the 27-tonne tomb may contain the remains of Alexander The Great, or even Cleopatra.

Mr Waziri also said the mummies had decomposed her being in the ground for thousands of years.

Ministry of Antiquities photos shows workers preparing to open the black granite sarcophagus that was discovered in Sidi Gaber district, Alexandria, Egypt.

This was one of several indications that had some people suspecting that the sarcophagus could contain the long-lost remains of Alexander the Great, who founded Alexandria. One of the men appears to have been struck by an arrow in the head, Abdul said.

On July 1, Egypt unearthed a 2,000-year-old sarcophagus in Alexandria, revealing that it is made of black granite of about 265 meters in length and 185 cm in height.

A team of scientists has survived the opening of an allegedly cursed sarcophagus in Alexandria, Egypt, to find the deteriorating remains of three skeletons.

But according to the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, the three skeletons found inside are probably those of warriors.

The box itself weight 27 tonnes, and is nearly three metres long, the largest structure of its kind ever found intact.

"The sarcophagus has been opened, but we have not been hit by a curse", joked Mustafa Waziri, secretary general of the Ministry of Antiquities, speaking with Egypt Today.

Mr Waziri said it was unlikely the remains found this week belonged to any notable members of the Ptolemaic dynasty (332 BC-30 BC) associated with Alexander the Great, or the subsequent Roman era.

Those rumours have been put to rest, as well as fears cracking it open would unleash a fearsome curse on mankind.

"We've opened it and, thank God, the world has not fallen into darkness", Reuters quoted Waziri as saying.

The skeletons will be studied further at a restoration museum, while the sarcophagus itself will preserved for historical purposes.
