Boys Rescued From Thai Cave, Operations Halted For The Day

Officials last week said they would bring the fittest people in the group out first, but Narongsak later said that whoever was ready first would be escorted out.

"The operation went much better than expected", mission head Narongsak Osottanakorn said on Sunday.

He said the health of the five people remaining in the cave was "still good" and rescuers would resume an operation to retrieve them in about 20 hours' time.

The rescue operation has been put on hold until today while compressed air tanks are replaced.

"The mission has resumed", a government official closely involved in the mission told Reuters, declining to be identified.

The rescue of the first four boys - whose soccer team is known as the Wild Boars - brought cheers and optimism on Sunday, bolstering hopes that more of the boys can survive a complicated and hours-long process that includes the use of multiple divers and a system of air tanks stashed along the escape route.

British divers discovered the 13, huddled on a muddy bank in a partly flooded chamber deep several kilometres inside the complex, on Monday last week.

Thai policemen secure the road leading to Tham Luang cave area as rescue operations continue for those still trapped inside the cave in Khun Nam Nang Non Forest Park.

A total of eight boys have now been brought out of the cave complex.

Authorities have said the mission could take three or four days to complete.

Night's relatives have said they believe the group went to the cave to celebrate his 16th birthday after a Saturday football practice and got caught as heavy rains caused the water inside the cave to suddenly rise.

The death of a former Thai Navy SEAL diver who ran out of oxygen in the cave on Friday underscored the danger of the journey even for professionals.

That left four boys and the team's coach trapped inside as the operation was called off for the day.

That led an upbeat Narongsak to promise more "good news" on Monday afternoon that materialised a few hours later with the emergence of the other four.

Rescuers had planned to take a 10- to 20-hour pause in the rescue efforts to replenish the cave with oxygen and give the team of 18 divers leading the boys on the hard journey a chance to rest.

Authorities have not confirmed the identity of the first four boys rescued. There was no word on the condition of the fifth boy brought out earlier on Monday.

Among those are USA military partners, British cave diving experts - including the two men who first located the boys a week ago - and rescue workers from Australia, China and other countries. A family member told CNN Monday that they hadn't been told which boys had been pulled out, and who is still trapped in the cave.

Four boys and the coach remain trapped in the cave.

The four who were rescued previously were taken to a hospital in Chiang Rai for evaluation. "We have to quarantine them for a little while due to fear of infection". That said, Musk's effort, while laudable, might not be needed for this particular rescue.

"We've used all the oxygen", Osatanakorn told reporters. One of the boys was removed by divers, placed on a stretcher and hospitalized.
