‘Can't say if Putin is friend or foe’

‘Can't say if Putin is friend or foe’

Trump fumed that "Germany is a captive of Russia" and said the USA would "have to do something" about a gas deal that's funneling billions into Moscow's economy.

In recent months Trump has repeatedly launched invective at America´s partners in the Atlantic alliance, a cornerstone of European security since World War II, accusing them of freeloading on the United States for defense. "I think that's very inappropriate".

There isn't a penalty for not meeting it, but Trump has repeatedly castigated Germany in particular for not spending enough, in his view, on defense.

Trump repeatedly pressed Jens Stoltenberg, NATO's secretary general, on why the US continued to pay money to the military alliance while countries continue to purchase energy from Moscow. He later returned to ripping Germany, explaining the country is "captive to Russian Federation". "So, we are supposed to protect you against Russian Federation", he explained. "How can you be stronger when a country is getting energy from the person you want to protect against?"

German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen hit back at Trump's remarks: "We have a lot of issues with Russian Federation without any doubt", she told reporters in English.

'We're protecting Germany. We're protecting France. "Well they could increase it immediately, tomorrow, and have no problem", Trump said.

CBS News White House correspondent Weija Jang says President Trump set the tone for the summit at his breakfast meeting with Stoltenberg; typically leaders hash out conflicts in private, but the tense exchange unfolded with cameras rolling.

"I believe that our trade will increase and lots of other things will increase, but we'll see what happens". "I have to bring it up because it's unfair to our country or our taxpayers".

'You tell me if that's appropriate because I think it's not. According to a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation report released yesterday, eight of the 29 member nations are expected to reach that goal by the end of 2018.
