Carmelo Anthony traded by OKC to Atlanta, but waived for free agency

Carmelo Anthony traded by OKC to Atlanta, but waived for free agency

Last season saw him average just 16.2 points while shooting at a 40 percent mark from the field.

Last month, Anthony opted into the final year of his contract, picking up a $28m option for the 2018/19 season, that contributed to a monster payroll touching nearly $310m after the re-signing of Paul George and Jeremi Grant. The only issue to resolve was what form that departure would come in: Anthony could be traded elsewhere before being waived and allowed to pursue a new home, or the Thunder could waive him itself.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Oklahoma City Thunder have agreed to trade Melo and a protected 2022 first-round pick to the Hawks in exchange for point guard Dennis Schroder.

Schroder, 24, has three years and $46.5 million remaining on his contract.

Carmelo Anthony reportedly was traded Thursday from the Thunder to the Hawks, and it doesn't appear the star forward will be in Atlanta for long.

Atlanta drafted Trae Young to be its point guard of the future, so Schroder, owed almost $47 million over the next three seasons, was expendable.

Schroder's exit from Atlanta was somewhat expected after the team acquired former Oklahoma point guard Trae Young in last month's draft. Carroll played in six summer league games for the team, averaging 4.2 points and 2.0 rebounds in nine minutes. The Thunder will save an additional $11 million with Schroder's $15.5 million contract and the $1.5 million cap hit of Luwawu-Cabarrot.

In one fell swoop, each of these three teams got a little bit of what it wanted.

Muscala's $5 million had to be included to make the deal work financially.

"A Heat agreement with Anthony could assure a Heat return by Wade, a close friend who now is a free agent", he wrote. Atlanta will receive Anthony, Justin Anderson and the protected first-rounder.

SiriusXM radio host and longtime National Basketball Association reporter Mitch Lawrence was first to report the potential deal between the Thunder and Hawks.
