European Union president to visit Donald Trump for trade talks

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday his meeting with Vladimir Putin would lead to "big results", in a continuing bid to calm a storm over his failure to criticize the Russian leader for Moscow's actions to undermine the 2016 US election, Reuters reports. In a tweet Trump said he elicited a promise from Putin to help negotiate with North Korea but did not say how.

The president's tweets did not address the reason the meeting triggered such a furor: Trump's suggestion that he believed Putin's denials of Russian election interference over the conclusions of USA intelligence officials who have pursued criminal charges against Russian nationals.

The president also said Monday that Putin's denials of interference were "extremely strong and powerful".

Senate Democrats said they wanted the American interpreter at the Helsinki meeting to testify to Congress on what was said during the private Trump-Putin session.

But while the United States leader expressed his "full faith and support for America's great intelligence agencies", he insisted that "Russia's actions had no impact at all on the outcome of the election".

In particular, the democratic leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer has offered to "immediately" hold a hearing with all senior members of the delegation who were present at the meeting of the presidents of the United States and Russian Federation. Pelosi also wondered whether they actually signaled a change in the president's approach to Russia's leader.

He said, "I'll take Dan Coats' word over Putin's any day".

Meanwhile, we're learning more about the Russian national, Mariia Butina, who is charged with being a foreign agent by the Justice Department.

Republican lawmakers also criticized Trump's comments in Helsinki and made clear they stand with US intelligence agencies and European allies who suspect Russian Federation of trying to destabilize the West.

The emergence of Mr. Coats, said a former C.I.A. official, should be a signal for Mr. Trump of what the administration position on Russian interference should be.

"We stand by our North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies and all those countries that are facing Russian Federation aggression".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., flanked by Sen.

Critics have accused him of siding with Russian Federation over his own country by failing to criticize Moscow for what US intelligence agencies a year ago described as Moscow's interference in the 2016 election in an attempt to sow discord, aid Trump's candidacy and disparage Trump's Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton. The president was discussing Republican tax legislation that's expected to be considered in September. The speaker said he stood by his Monday statement that "the president must appreciate that Russian Federation is not our ally". He might even have added that the United States had interfered countless times in the internal electoral processes, even primitive ones, of dozens of countries (including Russia) over many decades, and cautioned against excessive righteousness.

President Donald Trump is defending his Helsinki summit with Russia's president as a "great success" and blaming what he calls "the Fake News Media" for contrary views.

Schumer also urged the Senate to take up legislation to boost security for USA elections and to revive a measure passed earlier by the Judiciary Committee to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election interference.
