Here's Who Died on the Duck Boat

Here's Who Died on the Duck Boat

An initial assessment blamed thunderstorms and winds that approached hurricane strength, but it was not clear why the amphibious vehicle even ventured out into the water. The winds were probably stronger over the lake, Linderberg said. "ABC News" Victor Oquendo was in Branson where a survivor, who lost nine members of her family, talked about what happened when she was tossed into the water.

The National Transportation Safety Board was to send a team early Friday to investigate the incident, the agency said.

During our ride the captain said the U.S. Coast Guard does not allow them on the water if winds are over 40 miles per hour.

"We do not allow our Ducks to go into the Charles River if there is lightning in the area or if conditions are forecasted to exceed our operating parameters set by the U.S. Coast Guard", said Bob Schwartz, a spokesman for the company.

Another family member Carolyn Coleman stated two of her brother-in-laws had died in the accident.

The footage shows the vessel bobbing through the waves as the haul boat begins to become submerged in the swollen lake. Their dedication to helping anyone inside their town was evident from the local residents who tried to save the duck boat passengers to the families who traveled there to mourn. "When I saw them, they were throwing out life jackets to people", Coleman explained.

Commenting on the rescue operation, he said: "Emergency responders and civilian rescuers helped avert an even worse tragedy as people rushed to help in extremely risky conditions".

Four adults and three children were transported to the hospital, including two who remained in critical condition on Friday.

The tourist boat capsized and sank in as Thursday's storms hit the popular lake.

Ride the Ducks says they will continue to do safety drills every 90 days on how to save lives in case they have to abandon the boat or if there is a person overboard.

Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader previously confirmed to that media outlet that the captain was among those who survived the accident.

A microburst is a severe, localised wind gust, blasting down from a thunderstorm, typically covering an area less than 4km in diameter and lasting less than five minutes.

A Dallas family vacationing in Branson, Missouri, was on another duck boat on the lake at the same time another boat capsized, killing several people.

Duck amphibious vehicles have been involved in a number fatal accidents around the world in the past two decades, with some sinking or being swamped or others colliding with vehicles.

Suzanne Smagala with Ripley Entertainment, which owns Ride the Ducks in Branson, said the company was assisting authorities.

Williams, 73, was the driver on the duck boat.

Seventeen people died when the pleasure boat capsized.
