Hundreds of Women's March Protesters Arrested in Senate Office Building

Hundreds of Women's March Protesters Arrested in Senate Office Building

Friday, the groups held a news conference in regards to President Donald Trump's controversial policies in place at the border, which are separating families.

More than 700 planned marches are expected to draw hundreds of thousands of people across the country, from immigrant-friendly cities like Los Angeles and NY to conservative Appalachia and Wyoming under the banner Families Belong Together. "I don't understand why this administration won't support mothers who just want a better life for their children".

Capitol Police said the protesters were charged with the D.C. Code violation of crowding, obstructing or incommoding.

"This issue really affects so many families and it's so important, and this administration has really taken it to levels that we just can't stand for, even though it has a longer history in this country", Omeish said.

It is not the first such protest to take place, with almost 600 women arrested on Thursday during a sit-in at a US Senate building against the government's migration policy.

A splinter group of several dozen protesters in Washington went to protest at what they said was the residence of Stephen Miller, a White House adviser known for his hardline views on immigration.

Many families brought their own children to make a point, Craig reports.

Thousands of people began showing up since 10 a.m. Saturday morning to protest family separations.

Cheered on by some Democratic lawmakers who walked among them, the women said they were pushed to the protest by President Trump's zero tolerance policy which sparked separations of children from their parents. Over 600 marches are now taking place across the country, from major cities to small towns, where crowds have gathered to stand in opposition to ICE's inhumane policy of separating parents from children and then imprisoning children in detention centers.

"I have watched ICE liberate towns from the grasp of [criminal gangs]", Trump said on Twitter.

The marchers planned stops outside the Wells Fargo Center and the Hennepin County Jail.

"This is not my wheelhouse", Conroy said.

After federal Judge Dana Sabraw granted the preliminary injunction ordering that migrant children separated from their parents be returned to their families within 30 days - 14 days for children under 5 - the number of people signing up to participate in the protest increased, organizers said.

Immigration attorney Linda Rivas said groups have met with USA authorities, congressional representatives and other leaders to discuss an escalating immigration crackdown that they say began decades ago.

"We are here to say we're ready to sacrifice, and we're ready to leave our jobs, leave our families to come and take this act of civil disobedience here", Sarsour said.

Now, she said, they do.

Since that policy was implemented in May, families have been routinely separated after apprehension.

Trump says illegal immigration fosters crime and he implemented a "zero tolerance" policy in May to prosecute all immigrants apprehended for entering illegally.
