Indianapolis church creates visual statement in protest of zero tolerance immigration policy

A church in IN has "detained" statues of Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus in a bold statement against current USA immigration policies. In his speech, he clarified that the government will go ahead with the zero-tolerance policy against immigrants.

The church has placed the statues of Mary-carrying little Jesus in her lap-and Joseph in a chained cage.

Photos of the display show a statue of Joseph looking down on a statue of Mary, holding baby Jesus.

Reverend Stephen Carlsen told the IndyStar on Monday that the display is to protest the immigration policy that is separating families at borders and holding children in detention centers.

The Department of Justice recently announced that it will no longer separate immigrant families - but rather detain them together.

It was unclear how long the display would remain in place, but church officials suggested it could remain up as long as families continue to be detained. "They had to flee for asylum in Egypt. ..."

"People forget what that scene means", Carlsen told The Washington Post. "People who come to us for safety, for refuge are just like everyone in our families". "We don't think that's true of our best American values". "The heart of God is always with those who are on the margins, who are vulnerable and have no voice".

The church has become progressive in recent years, especially since deciding to marry same-sex couples when in legalized such marriage in 2014, Carlsen said. "We're so divided", Carlsen said. "This family is every family, and every family is holy", Rev.

Over the weekend, hundreds gathered near the Indiana Statehouse as part of a nationwide protest against family separation.

Christ Church Cathedral put up the display at their lawn on Monument Circle overnight. Similar images circulated in the news media during the 2014 migrant crisis under the Obama administration.

Carlsen said he hopes the caged icons will inspire people of good will and faith to recognize that the USA policy of separating families must end. "We wanted people to see it as we were coming to work".

"People have to connect the dots".

More than 2,500 children were sent to shelters and facilities across the country between May and June.

But Trump reversed course amid a public uproar that included condemnation from religious leaders, including Pope Francis.

Trump signed an executive order stopping the policy on June 20. But it has been reported that only 500 children have been reunited with their parents so far.

Church member Mark Reckart said he is proud of the his church. "I would love for it to be outdated and be taken down".
