N. Korea aims to hide key parts of nuclear program

The latest US intelligence assessment of Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program suggests that "North Korean officials are exploring ways to deceive Washington about the number of nuclear warheads, and missiles and the types and numbers of facilities they have, believing that the United States is not aware of the full range of their activities", the Post reported, citing four USA officials who have seen or been briefed on the latest intelligence.

US President Donald Trump, right, meets with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Sentosa Island in Singapore.

He said the administration was well aware of North Korea's track record over the decades in dragging out negotiations with the U.S.to continue weapons development.

"There are lots of things that we know that North Korea has tried to hide from us for a long time", one USA official said.

Bolton said the US has developed a program that would enable a relatively rapid dismantlement of North Korea's arsenal if the Kim regime is cooperative.

"Now we're saving a lot of money", Trump said of the cancellation of large-scale military drills that involve flights of U.S. bombers from the Pacific U.S. territory of Guam.

He said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will likely discuss that proposal with the North Koreans soon.

Doubts over North Korea's intentions have deepened amid reports that it is continuing to produce fissile material for weapons.

"Now that we have concluded the US-North Korea summit in success, I want (China) to work toward early lifting of the sanctions", Kim reportedly told Xi, according to the newspaper. Trump touted the agreement as a significant step toward peace in the world.

Japan has long maintained a tight-lipped stance about its exact defense posture against North Korea, including the locations of the high-tech Aegis vessels.

"This attack shocked the conscience of our nation and filled our hearts with grief", Trump said.

The Washington Post reported on Saturday that United States intelligence officials have concluded that North Korea does not intend to fully give up its nuclear arsenal and is considering ways to hide the number of weapons it has. The Financial Times reported that Pompeo was due to visit North Korea this week but Reuters has not been able to confirm his travel plans.

The Washington Post on Saturday cited unnamed USA intelligence officials as concluding that North Korea does not intend to fully surrender its nuclear stockpile.

"So we gave nothing".

While North Korea made a public show in June of demolishing the country's main nuclear weapons test site, there has been little public evidence of efforts to dismantle scores of other sites linked to production of nuclear and chemical weapons and delivery systems.

"We still need to flesh out all the things that underlay the commitments that were made that day in Singapore".

The only uranium enrichment facility North Korea has publicly acknowledged is Yongbyon - though reports of secret facilities have surfaced.

Pressure will now be on Pompeo to make progress in negotiations with North Korea to turn the summit declaration into concrete action.
