PM Narendra Modi Dials Imran Khan, Expresses Hope on Democracy in Pakistan

PM Narendra Modi Dials Imran Khan, Expresses Hope on Democracy in Pakistan

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has dominated politics in the port megacity of Karachi for decades, and won six seats in the general election after splitting with its longtime leader, Altaf Hussain.

Election authorities have not yet confirmed when they expect to announce the results.

But the monitors criticized the campaign, saying it was marred by intimidation of some candidates, an effort to undermine the former ruling party and media self-censorship.

The Hurriyat (G) Chairman said, "We hope Pakistan's offer and spirit of flexibility will be reciprocated by India so that new vistas of cooperation are opened for the resolution of issues including Kashmir issue in accordance with the aspirations of Kashmiri people".

The Indian statement, however, did not refer to "terror-free atmosphere", the standard language template for New Delhi's response to Pakistan's overtures over the last two years.

Third place in the National Assembly went to the left-of-centre Pakistan People's party with 39 seats.

Out of 272 seats, elections were held in 270 constituencies as two seats remained uncontested due to multiple reasons. Human rights groups, academics and many others say that Pakistan's powerful military helped Khan by arresting and threatening his political rivals in the months leading up to the vote on Wednesday, all but securing his victory.

Khan may struggle to implement his plans to create an "Islamic welfare state" in Pakistan.

Pakistan and United States reiterated their resolve on Tuesday to restore their bilateral relationship. The defeat of several stalwarts of both the PML-N and the PPP, including Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the son of Benazir Bhutto and Co-Chairman of the PPP, in their own strongholds has also been attributed to the military's interference in the electoral process.

Sattar said that based on moral principals, he had "serious reservations" about joining a coalition with Khan's party.

It further stated that Modi had advocated a more active approach.

The Allahu Akbar Tehreek party of Hafiz Saeed, who is accused of masterminding the 2008 attacks that killed 166 people in the Indian city of Mumbai, did not win a single seat. Khan's party on Sunday announced that it is trying to reach out to smaller parties and independents to form the next government. If Khan wants to implement his sweeping agenda, the PTI will need to control the Punjab parliament.

According to the results, the PTI has bagged 116 general seats 22 short of simple majority whereas the PML-N and PPP have won 64 and 43 seats, respectively. The IMF visits each of its member countries annually, to conduct an economic and financial assessment of government policies and provide policy recommendations.
