Russian woman charged with espionage in the US

A Russian woman living in Washington D.C. has been arrested and a criminal complaint has been filed accusing her of being a Russian spy.

Just hours later, the Justice Department announced charges against Mariia Butina, whom they accused of a years-long campaign to influence US politics in Russia's favor.

"Moscow seeks to create wedges that reduce trust and confidence in democratic processes, degrade democratisation efforts, weaken USA partnerships with European allies, undermine Western sanctions, encourage anti-U.S. political views, and counter efforts to bring Ukraine and other former Soviet states into European institutions". The charge was brought the US Attorney for the District of Columbia and do not appear to stem from Mueller's investigation.

Emily Singer, a senior political reporter for Mic, tweeted out a photo from inside the White House and claimed that Maria Butina, who was charged Monday for conspiring against the U.S.as a secret Russian agent, was among a gaggle of staffers inside the Oval Office. "We learned about this from the media, and naturally the family [is monitoring the situation]", her sister Marina Butina said, adding that the family has not been in contact with Maria since her arrest.

"These lines could be used by the Russian Federation to penetrate the US national decision-making apparatus to advance the agenda of the Russian Federation", the affidavit reads, using Russia's official country name. After the February 2, 2017, breakfast, Butina emailed an organizer to promise "important information for you to further this new relationship" and requested a meeting. FBI Special Agent Kevin Helson wrote that Butina was attempting to "establish a "back channel" communication for representatives of the Government of Russian Federation".

Driscoll said during the hearing that Butina had recently earned a master's degree in global relations from American University.

In an email to the campaign, Erickson referred to Torshin as "President Putin's emissary" in an effort to improve relations with the United States, the Post reported. As improbable as it may sound, the Russian bear shares more interests with the Republican elephant than the Democratic donkey.

Butina's connections to Alexander Torshin, the deputy governor of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, have been reported by multiple news outlets in the past year.

"Thank you for this opportunity to address the Russian people on the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Russian Constitution", Bolton says.

Posts are seen on Maria Butina's Twitter page. Writes to me that D. Trump (member of NRA) is really for cooperation with Russian Federation. Trump Jr. has said the interaction was brief and not memorable. The meeting did not happen.

Torshin, who became an NRA life member in 2012, was among a group of Russian oligarchs and officials targeted in April with Treasury Department sanctions for their associations with Putin and their roles in "advancing Russia's malign activities".
