Saitama sizzles at 41.1 degrees, sets heat record for Japan:The Asahi Shimbun

Excessive heat was also observed in both South and North Korea on Monday, the Associated Press reported.

A deadly heat wave blistering across Japan has claimed more than 30 lives this month, with little relief in sight as record temperatures are expected to persist until later this week.

Meanwhile searing hot temperatures are forecast for parts of South Korea. On Saturday alone, at least 11 people died from suspected heatstroke.

They also said that there has been a 61 percent increase in people suffering with heat-related illnesses on the previous year. Yonhap news agency said that the temperature in Gangneung, less than 170 km east of capital Seoul, recorded the highest-ever morning low of 31 degrees Celsius at 6.45 am, reported AP. In Tokyo, the temperature reached a high of 40.8 degrees Celsius in Ome, said the weather agency.

The mercury hit 39.9 C (103.8 F) in the southeastern town of Hayang, the highest temperature in the country so far this year.

Temperatures peaked at 40C in central Japan earlier this week, a five-year high.

Thousands of people in Japan have been rushed to hospitals with heatstroke symptoms during the heatwave.

The death toll climbed to more than 220 and at least 20 people are still missing, according to the Japan Times.

Millions were forced to evacuate due to floods and landslides, with most of the 200 people who have died coming from the Hiroshima and Okayama prefectures.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike acknowledged Monday that the recent heatwave was "exactly like living in a sauna". NHK national television tallied seven deaths.

Japan has staggered through blistering heat since the second week of July, resulting in scores of daily, monthly and all-time heat records throughout the country. Cosett Romero from Mexico said she and her family were getting headaches.

Authorities in Japan warned people to stay inside and use air conditioning.

But this year's record temperatures have surprised residents and officials alike, and revived concerns about the 2020 Summer Olympics, which will be held in July and August in Tokyo.
