Trump finds it 'inconceivable' lawyer would tape a client

"Inconceivable that the government would break into a lawyer's office (early in the morning) - nearly unheard of", Trump tweeted Saturday morning.

An attorney for President Donald Trump's former lawyer says "any attempt at spin can not change what is on" a recording of Trump discussing a potential payment for a former Playboy model's account of having an affair with him years ago. "The good news is that your favorite President did nothing wrong!". His lawyer has said the payment was never made.

The recording was part of a large collection of documents and electronic records seized by federal authorities from the longtime Trump fixer earlier this year.

Trump had initially said publicly that he believed his longtime fixer would remain loyal to him, but Cohen has increasingly suggested he's preparing to cooperate with the feds as he grows more and more isolated from his former boss.

Giuliani said the discussion of payment did not mean McDougal's claim of an affair was true and characterized it as an attempt to resolve false allegations that were "personally damaging" to Trump. NY state, for example, has a "one-party consent" law, which makes it a crime to record an in-person or telephone conversation unless one party participating in the conversation consents.

But Giuliani's claims that the tape does Trump no damage was disputed by a source close to Cohen who said that Giuliani is "trying to say what is bad is good".

What has Trump previously said?

Mr Cohen once famously vowed he would take a bullet for Mr Trump, but he told ABC News this month that his loyalty to his family and country came before his old boss.

On Friday, Lanny Davis, an attorney for Cohen, said in a statement: "Obviously, there is an ongoing investigation, and we are sensitive to that". Trump has denied any affair with either Daniels or McDougal.

She claims that she started an affair with Trump in 2006, just after his wife, Melania, had their son, Barron.

In a tweet, Trump called such taping "totally unheard of & perhaps illegal". "Any attempt at spin cannot change what is on the tape". "When all of this evidence ultimately comes to light, and I hope that it will. this is going to spell a significant problem for Michael Cohen and a larger problem for the president".

In her lawsuit against AMI, McDougal said she was happy when AMI bought her story then did not publish it, because she was not anxious for publicity.

Cohen, who became Trump's personal lawyer in 2007, is infamous for paying $130,000 to Daniels - real name, Stephanie Clifford - shortly before the 2016 election to keep quiet about her alleged affair with Trump.

"It's pretty clear from the tape, it's the first time Trump is finding out".

Giuliani said the conversation involved reimbursing the parent company of the National Enquirer tabloid for McDougal's story rights. McDougal, 47, alleges that she had a 10-month romantic affair with Trump in 2006.
