Trump Says No President Has Been as 'Tough' on Russia

Trump Says No President Has Been as 'Tough' on Russia

The exchange raised further questions about Trump's true position on the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin and the us intelligence community's consensus that Moscow interfered in the 2016 election and is still trying to undermine American democratic institutions.

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday his meeting with Vladimir Putin would lead to "big results", in a continuing bid to calm a storm over his failure to criticize the Russian leader for Moscow's actions to undermine the 2016 US election.

HORSLEY: There is. And remember; when Trump talks about inviting Russia back into the G-7 or bucks his advisers to congratulate the Russian president on his re-election in what was widely seen as a fraudulent vote, that says something about the U.S. So in foreign policy certainly action and policies count, but rhetoric counts, too.

"While the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting in Brussels was an acknowledged triumph, with billions of dollars more being put up by member countries at a faster pace, the meeting with Russian Federation may prove to be, in the long run, an even greater success", Trump tweeted.

Earlier in the day, President Donald Trump said "no" after a reporter asked him whether the USA was still a target of Russian-led cyberattacks and election meddling.

"This kind of effort should be a mutual one", Putin said.

Asked if he held Putin personally responsible, Trump told CBS, "I would, because he's in charge of the country".

JEFF GLOR: But you haven't condemned Putin specifically. "I let him know we can't have this, we're not going to have it, and that's the way it's going to be", he continued.

After a reporter asked during a cabinet meeting whether Russian Federation was still targeting the U.S., Trump first tried to avoid answering by telling the assembled media "thank you", usually a sign that he won't take questions.

He declined to answer whether Putin - who adamantly denies Moscow interfered with the US election - is lying, however. "I can only say that I do have confidence in our intelligence agencies as now constituted".

In the video, the President can be seen introducing his wife to Putin, the two sharing a handshake, but as Putin releases Melania's hand, cameras captured the expression of horror etched onto her face.

In the CBS News interview on Wednesday afternoon, Trump said he believes Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, who has warned that Russian Federation poses an ongoing threat to cyber security. It would allow Special Counsel Robert Mueller's prosecutors to question alleged Russian intelligence agents accused of hacking Democrat emails, but would also give Russian prosecutors access to United States officials allegedly involved with oligarch Bill Browder's tax crimes - notably, former U.S. ambassador to Moscow, Michael McFaul.

"Republicans in Congress need to stand firm that we absolutely will not tolerate the President even considering turning over a U.S. ambassador. I think they do". You know, Clapper wrote me a attractive letter when I first went to office, and it was really nice. "They didn't cover my meeting. and in that meeting, we discussed many, many things that were very, very positive for both countries".
