Ving Rhames Says Police Held Him at Gunpoint in His Home

Rhames, who starred in Pulp Fiction and the Mission: Impossible franchise said police were called to his California house by a neighbour who claimed she saw a "large, black man" inside.

"I am sure you hear about all the reports of Black men being attacked by police", Clay Cane said to Rhames. "I opened the door [and] it's a red dot pointed on my face from a 9 mm", he recalled of the cops storming the house.

"My hands are up and they have me outside, " said Rhames.

"He said it was a mistake and apologized", said Rhames.

"The captain of police - and you can check with the Santa Monica Police Department - he recognized me because my son played against his [son's] school", Rhames said.

The officers then escorted Rhames to the the neighbor in question across the street and, when confronted for her racist assumption, she denied it.

The confrontation ended only after one of the responding officers recognized Rhames - not from his roles in movies, but because their sons competed in a basketball league. Rhames said in the interview, "This is the God's honest truth". So, as a matter of fact, I was watching ESPN, so I get up, and I'm just in my basketball shorts, literally.

The popular actor, who lives in Santa Monica, Calif., told the story after being asked about his own experiences with racism.

Actor Ving Rhames watches players warm up on the sideline before the preseason game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Detroit Lions on August 14, 2010 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. "[An officer] said to me, 'A woman called 911 and said a large black man was breaking into the house". In 2017, his department created a city-wide program called Meet Your Neighbors (think block parties, ice cream socials, coffee dates) to help avoid such problems. Officers from the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) responded to the area with the information available to them. "Just like ... Trayvon had a bag of Skittles", says Rhames, referring to Trayvon Martin, the teenager gunned down in Florida by a neighborhood patrol watchman in 2012.

In the past few months, a woman called police on a black man wearing socks in the community pool in Memphis.
