3D printable guns spark debate on Second Amendment, public safety

The suit, filed on Monday (Tuesday NZ Time) in Seattle, asked a judge to block the federal government's late-June settlement with Defense Distributed, which allowed the company to make the plans available online.

Gidley notes that it's now illegal to own or make a wholly plastic gun, including any made with a 3D printer, and says the administration supports that law and "will continue to look at all options available to us to do what is necessary to protect Americans while also supporting the First and Second amendments".

Gun control proponents are concerned the weapons made from 3-D printers are untraceable, undetectable "ghost" firearms that pose a threat to global security.

Local attorneys general are also gunning (pun intended) for Defense Distributed; several states on Monday filed a lawsuit against Wilson's website, as well as the Trump administration.

Last week, three of the largest gun safety advocacy groups filed a motion asking a federal judge in Austin to block Defense Distributed from posting the files in question.

Hours later, five gun-rights activist groups based in California and Washington state posted the website Code Is Free Speech, offering freely downloadable code and instructions to make seven firearms, the same selection promised for Wilson's site.

But those who support the release say that the blueprints are protected by the First and Second amendments.

Senators added their voices later in the day, urging the president to reverse the settlement decision.

"We should be doing everything we can to make it more hard for criminals, children, and individuals with serious mental illness to possess a gun".

Meanwhile, Cody R Wilson, the founder of digital firearm firm Defense Distributed responsible for the lawsuit, announced that his project was going "dark".

President Trump has tweeted, "I am looking into 3D plastic guns being sold to the public".

Ferguson's concerns were shared by many political figures and even president Donald Trump had expressed reservations about the logic in making such weapons available to the public.

"Many antigun politicians and members of the media have wrongly claimed that 3D printing technology will allow for the production and widespread proliferation of undetectable plastic firearms", said Chris Cox, the NRA's executive director for legislative action. Critics say the weapon can be undetectable and they don't have serial numbers, so they can be traced.

A Liberator pistol appears next to the 3-D printer on which its components were made in Hanover, Md., in 2013.

"All you need is a little money and you can download a blueprint from the Internet to make a gun at home, " said Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer.

Lasnik is expected to hold a hearing on August 10 to determine whether the order should be made permanent. But a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order, to stop the release. Oregon's attorney general, Ellen Rosenblum, called releasing the plans online an utter disregard for public safety. "It is temporary - and we'll be back in court immediately seeking a preliminary and permanent injunction".
