Ben Stokes trial: England cricketer told ‘shut up or I’ll bottle you’

Ben Stokes trial: England cricketer told ‘shut up or I’ll bottle you’

On Monday's opening day of the trial, jurors saw footage of Stokes, 27, brawling with 27-year-old Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale, 28, outside Mbargo in the early hours of September 25 last year.

"They weren't shying away from it but they were obviously offended by the abuse being levelled towards them".

He said the pair "scuffled" and ended up on the floor, before Hale came at him from behind - grabbing and pulling him. He mentioned my gold teeth and he said I looked like [expletive] and I replied, "Thank you very much".

Cunningham said two gay men he knew, William O'Connor and Kai Barry, then emerged from the nightclub and began talking to each other.

"I asked him (Stokes), "If you are going to start on someone, start on me", he said.

"I grappled with the second guy, in the course of that I can recall hitting him a couple of times. Just like hand gestures. camp gestures".

Mr Cunningham was accused by Stokes' defence lawyer of being rude and aggressive when the cricketers offered him £300 to be allowed back into the club, something the doorman denied.

"At this point, I felt vulnerable and frightened". This was an extreme act of aggression in the circumstances and informed my assessment of the situation.

"I did not known Ryan Hale or Ryan Ali and I was forced to make a decision as to how far they would be prepared to go and what they might do if they got the upper hand". All three men deny the charges.

"As I was on my own, when I separated two of them more people carried on behind me".

"He raised his voice fairly loudly", Ali said.

Off-duty police community support officer Mark Spure told Bristol Crown Court that Stokes had been the "main aggressor" in the group.

Footage from a body camera worn by PC Stacey Alway, who arrested Mr Stokes, was shown to the jury.

"I believe I felt threatened", he said.

Ali also described how, as he lay "in the gutter" having allegedly been punched by Stokes, he made a phone call to the council's CCTV office to ensure they had footage of the incident.

Ali was taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary by ambulance, with doctors noting that he had suffered a fracture to the medial orbital wall on the left side of his face.

Stokes, who starred on Saturday as England beat India in the first Test at Edgbaston, is missing the second Test at Lord's due to the trial, which is expected to last five to seven days.
