Florida mother accused of drowning 4-year-old daughter

Florida mother accused of drowning 4-year-old daughter

The mother of a 4-year-old girl was charged with murder after throwing the child into the Hillsborough River in Tampa, Florida.

By 4 p.m., witnesses spotted the vehicle - which still had a bright green price tag across the windshield - parked near the Hillsborough River not far from the Columbus Drive bridge, and saw Denson pull Je'Hyrah from the auto. The slain girl was identified as Je'Hryah Daniels.

Witnesses observed her forcefully remove a child from the backseat, dragging the child by the arm, headed toward the Hillsborough River, police said.

Tampa police say Denson drove Je'Hyrah Daniels in a stolen vehicle Thursday to the Hillsborough River, waded in with the girl, tossed her into the water, and walked away.

Chief Brian Dugan referred to the case as "tragic, chaotic and unbelievable" at a Friday morning news conference at Tampa Police headquarters.

"Eventually, we just saw the scuba divers out there pulling up with a body", said resident Romano Muniz.

Police allege Denson, 26, had just stolen a Nissan Altima from an auto fix shop.

"The mom is in custody, and right now we are sorting through to get answers", said Dugan. Officers who responded tried to go into the dark, murky water, but it wasn't until a police dive team arrived that the girl was found. They said Denson then walked out of the water and away from the river.

That's when she shrugged off the child and swam back to shore, leaving the girl to drown.

She has been taken to jail and held without bond, charged with first degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and grand theft auto charges. She said that by the time she realized what was going on, it was too late.

Je'Hyrah Daniels was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The identity of the woman and child have not been released at this time.
