Indonesian geological agency: Tsunami warning after 7.0 M quake off Lombok island

An shallow natural disaster measuring 7.0 struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Lombok on Sunday, killing at least 39 people.

A 6.9-magnitude natural disaster and a series of strong aftershocks shook Indonesia on Sunday, causing people to flee their homes in the island archipelago.

"Because we were at the top of a building it was shaking quite a lot and a lot of things falling over".

In a Facebook post at about 9.55pm, the Minister said that he was working on his laptop in his room on the 10th floor of a building when the quake struck.

The United States Geological Survey said the epicentre of the quake was on land on Lombok, though initial reports put it just off the coast.

"All the hotel guests were running, so I did too".

The latest quake, which triggered a brief tsunami warning, damaged buildings as far away as Denpasar in Bali, including a department store and the airport terminal, where ceiling panels were shaken loose, authorities said.

Bali´s worldwide airport suffered damage inside the terminal but the runway was unaffected and operations had returned to normal, disaster agency officials said. Meanwhile, Harian Metro reporter Shuhada Mansor, who is now on Karimunjawa Island, said the Lombok quake also caused panic among the islanders when the emergency siren was sounded.

Dwikorita Karnawati, head of Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, told MetroTV that the tsunami warning has ended.

Footage appearing to show the impact of aftershocks has already appeared online, with one person reporting how they felt the quake from the neighboring Bali island.

The quake was even stronger than another that struck last week, which measured 6.4 and killed 17 people in the region.

Lombok Island was hit hard by a 6.4 magnitude quake last Sunday which killed 16 people and injured another 162.

Last week's natural disaster stranded more than 500 hikers on a mountain in Lombok. People filled the streets.
