Iraqi PM to visit Iran, Turkey as US sanctions bite

Iraqi PM to visit Iran, Turkey as US sanctions bite

The United States reimposed stiff economic sanctions on Iran on Monday, ratcheting up pressure on the Islamic Republic despite statements of deep dismay from European allies, three months after President Donald Trump pulled the USA out of the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

The U.S. urged Britain to ditch its support for a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and instead join forces with Washington to counter the global threat it says Tehran poses.

Britain remained open to talks with the United States on how to address concerns about Iran.

In the article, Johnson said the Trump administration is "determined to make sure they [the sanctions] are fully enforced". "It is time to move on from the flawed 2015 deal", he said.

Iran had also warned past year that it enjoyed the capability to restore its uranium enrichment operations and even develop its capacity to 100,000 SWUs (Separative Work Units) if the nuclear deal with the world powers failed as a result of the U.S. non-compliance with its undertakings.

The U.S. sanctions that began last week prohibit any transactions with Iran involving dollars, gold, precious metals, aluminum, steel, commercial passenger aircraft, shipping and Iranian seaports.

The meeting also stressed the importance of maintaining relations with Iran, it added.

Asked for comment on Johnson's op-ed, the British foreign office referred to comments made last week by Middle East Minister Alistair Burt.

"When we were inking the nuclear deal, we stopped production of 20% fuel and deposited the excessive fuel in Russian Federation in almost 10 batches".

"Until then, America is turning up the pressure and we want the United Kingdom by our side", Johnson wrote in the Sunday Telegraph newspaper.

It saw the regime agree to curb its nuclear programme in return for the lifting of sanctions.

In his article Sunday, Johnson said, "Only by presenting a united front can we exert the maximum possible pressure on the Iranian regime and get them to finally change course and put an end to their malign and reckless activities both at home and overseas".

Since then, Britain, France and Germany have sought to keep the deal alive, while Trump has prepared new sanctions, saying a broader and more balanced deal is needed.
