Nvidia reveals $800 GeForce RTX 2080 at Gamescom 2018

Nvidia reveals $800 GeForce RTX 2080 at Gamescom 2018

At NVIDIA's pre-Gamescom event and keynote in Germany, the company announced a new set of graphics cards meant to deliver the "ultimate PC gaming experience".

All of this power is coming packed into the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20 series which includes three different cards at launch. Nvidia's RTX technology adds new ray-tracing cores for high-quality, real-time rendering with global illumination, and the Tensor cores will speed up creating image detail quickly where there's none. Zotac too has four graphics cards on display: the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 2080 Ti AMP and Triple Fan, along with the GeForce RTX 2080 Blower and AMP. NVIDIA first debuted this architecture in the workstation grade Quadro RTX 8000, 6000 and 5000 GPU and it is now being brought to consumer grade graphics cards. Meanwhile, the RTX 2080, will go for $699. Regardless of the card you choose, you'll have 4,352 CUDA Cores, along with a base clock speed of 1.35 GHZ. That new nomenclature is a nod to the ray-tracing capabilities of the new Turing architecture.

The most powerful of the two cards arriving next month, the RTX 2080 Ti, will start at $999. NVIDIA will have less CUDA cores on the RTX 2070 with it clocking in with 2304 CUDA cores, and a 185W TDP.

The biggest selling point of the gaming chips released on Monday is an improvement in so-called "real-time ray tracing", or the ability for the chip to simulate how light rays will bounce around in a visual scene, which helps video games and other computer graphics more closely resemble shadows and reflections in the real world.

Nvidia's presentation included live in-game demonstrations of ray tracing in action from Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Metro: Exodus, Assetto Corsa, and Battlefield V. It was here that the manufacturer introduced GeForce RTX, next-generation hardware that promises up to six times faster performance than previous generation video cards.

If we had to guess, we'd say that the RTX 2080 will probably be the card most serious PC gamers opt for.
