Park reclaims top spot in world rankings with playoff win

Park reclaims top spot in world rankings with playoff win

Sung Hyun Park erased a two-shot deficit over the final four holes and birdied the first hole of a playoff with Lizette Salas on Sunday to win the Indy Women in Tech Championship.

Park has two majors and four overall LPGA Tour victories the last two years, winning the U.S. Women's Open and CP Women's Open last year and the Volunteers of America LPGA Texas Classic and KPMG Women's PGA Championship this season. After her first bogey of the tournament, on the par-4 eighth, Salas closed out the round with another birdie to tie Park.

The 24-year-old previously held the women's number one ranking in November last year for just one week before Shanshan Feng claimed the mantle.

South Korean Amy Yang is one shot back at 12-under.

"It was going to be hard to top that 62 yesterday but I stayed patient", Salas said.

"I'm very honoured to be ranked No. 1 and I hope to maintain that ranking for a long time", she said through an interpreter. "This was a completely different golf course, so I had to change my mentality a little bit and I had to forget about the 62 in a way and just go back to what I was doing".

But the 29-year-old Californian seems to have the ideal touch for this course, which weaves around and inside the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Park was then whisked away to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's finish line, where she celebrated by kissing the bricks and taking the traditional sip of milk - though she declined to take the milk bath as the event's inaugural victor, Lexi Thompson, did previous year. "I'm not happy with how I played the back nine but at least I got a birdie to close", said Hataoka, who rolled in a three-foot putt on 18 to finish on a high. Defending champion Lexi Thompson has 10 holes to complete, but now sits well inside the cut line at six-under par.

She made up ground despite being assessed a one-stroke penalty after hitting her tee shot on No. 10 into the sixth fairway and lifting the ball without authority. But it just felt good.

And with more rain in the forecast Thursday night and Friday, the scores could go even lower as a star-studded cast chases down Salas, Yin and Hataoka.
