Rangers-mad Oli McBurnie mocks Celtic on Twitter after Champions League disaster

Rangers-mad Oli McBurnie mocks Celtic on Twitter after Champions League disaster

Leigh Griffiths has stressed the importance of Champions League football to Celtic ahead of tonight's crunch qualifier against AEK Athens.

'Unfortunately, I could not play because I'm not yet 100 per cent operational, ' the 27-year-old said on Instagram.

Manager Brendan Rodgers said the centre-half's absence made him "sad" and that he had to put his faith in "players who want to be here".

But it comes amid increasing uncertainty about his future, with Boyata's agent Jacques Lichtenstein previously claiming the Hoops had broken promises to his client who was the subject of a failed £9m bid.

The agent of Belgium global Dedryck Boyata has hit out at Celtic for turning down transfer offers from Fulham, Olympiakos and Fenerbahce.

However, he was sidelined by a mystery back injury.

Celtic go into the second leg against AEK with their progress to the play-off round of Champions League qualifying hanging in the balance after drawing 1-1 at home last week.

Celtic have been hoping to keep hold of Boyata, but they are swimming against the tide, with the player eyeing a move on the back of his superb performances for Belgium at the World Cup.

'The physio saw it and examined me right after the session.

The former Liverpool boss is confident that Boyata will not leave Celtic in the summer transfer window.

Socceroo Rogic started the match after a cameo role in Celtic's loss to Hearts on the weekend yet, try as he might, was unable to provide a breakthrough for Celtic in his 76 minutes on the pitch.

"I think they will sell him, but they have refused Fulham, so the English market is closed and the only market now is the Continent".

Boyata has developed into one of the key players for Celtic since he joined from Manchester City in 2015.
