Trump Administration Restores Sanctions on Iran

Trump Administration Restores Sanctions on Iran

He said President Donald Trump is intent on getting Iran to "behave like a normal country".

"At this point, they are facing what many call one of the worst economic crisis this country has ever seen".

The European Union has launched an attempt to protect European businesses from Donald Trump's sanctions on Iran as the United States administration voiced its intent to apply "maximum pressure" on Tehran by vigorously applying its punitive measures.

He also said Tehran expects the European countries to bring forward a practical package of proposals to salvage Iranian nuclear deal, also known as JCPOA, after the USA pull-out in May.

Why did Mr Trump abandon the nuclear deal?

The second round of sanctions, due in November, is expected to be tougher, as it will take hundreds of thousands of barrels of Iranian crude oil off the market, according to industry sources.

Iran's rial currency has lost more than half its value since April, in part because of fears about sanctions, but also because of an attempt to fix the value of the rial.

His new strategy regarding meeting with Iranian officials caught commentators off guard, as he had been increasingly hostile to the Islamic Republic; on July 22, Trump threatened Iranian President Hassan Rouhani with an all-caps tweet.

Rouhani implied that if the United States signed up again to the nuclear deal and lifted sanctions, then that could pave the ground for negotiations.

"The president has always said he is prepared to talk, but it's important that Iran has to be committed to changing its ways in order for those discussions to prove of any value", he added. The president's comments came after Rouhani claimed that a war with Iran would be the "mother of all wars".

The United States will reimpose the sanctions against Iran, which were lifted as part of the Obama administration's Iran nuclear deal.

According to the official, Trump's decision to withdraw from the Iran deal upheld his highest obligation: to protect the safety and security of the American people.

European foreign affairs chiefs have pledged to protect firms against the impact of USA sanctions for doing business with Iran.

They will also limit Iran's access to software and automotive sectors, while blocking its ability to buy commercial aircraft or trade in food and other goods, as well.

"There will be pressure because of sanctions but we will overcome this with unity", he said.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

President Donald Trump threatened "severe consequences" for those who continue to trade with Iran, as administration officials said Monday that newly re-imposed USA sanctions are meant to change the regime's behavior, not topple leaders in Tehran.

"The Iranian regime faces a choice", Trump said in a statement.

Iran's net official reserves are projected to decline this year to $97.8 billion, enough to finance about 13 months of imports, the International Monetary Fund estimated in March.

The agreement called for Iran to sharply curb its uranium enrichment program in exchange for the end of most sanctions.

The Trump administration in recent weeks has ramped up a pressure campaign against the Iranian government, decrying its leaders as exploitative and corrupt while supporting protesters on the ground.

Iranian authorities have barely mentioned days of demonstrations in the major cities of Isfahan, Shiraz, Mashhad and Tehran, driven by concerns over the economy as well as wider anger at the political system.
