Turkey and U.S. trade new threats in detained pastor row

Brunson, from North Carolina, is under house arrest as his trial on terrorism charges continues.

ANKARA, TURKEY-A detained American pastor has become a symbol of a growing rift between Turkey and the United States, but problems in the Cold War-era alliance as well as Turkey's own financial crisis are unlikely to dissipate even if he is released and Washington eases economic penalties.

It has lost almost 40 per cent of its value against the dollar this year, hit by both the diplomatic rift and investor alarm about President Tayyip Erdogan's influence over monetary policy.

But according to Middle East Eye, Turkish diplomats said they could release Brunson anyway, subject to further concessions from the United States which could soothe diplomatic tensions and helping alleviate the diplomatic and economic crisis.

"Turkey - they have not proven to be a good friend".

Mr Trump described him as "our wonderful Christian Pastor, who I must now ask to represent our Country as a great patriot hostage".

The Turkish lira TRY= rose 3.0 percent to 5.79 per dollar, supported by Qatar's pledge on Wednesday to invest $15 billion in Turkey. "Our relations with Turkey are not good at this time!"

China on Thursday said a delegation led by its vice commerce minister would travel to the United States for talks.

Meanwhile, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's has consolidated power over the central bank, and pushed for it to refrain from raising interest rates to support the currency, as experts say it should.

The ongoing case has caused a deterioration in U.S.

Erdogan and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron agreed in a phone call Thursday to foster trade ties, a Turkish presidential source said.

In the Turkish courts, Brunson has been unsuccessful in arguing for his release, and on Friday had his latest appeal rejected, according to The Associated Press.

Trump added the pastor is a "very innocent man" and "we got somebody out for him - he needed help getting somebody out of some place".

"We suspect that there are diminishing marginal returns to additional technical measures so long as they are not accompanied by a fundamentally-oriented policy package".

In an interview with The New York Times, Musk acknowledged exhaustion from overwork as regulators probe his statements about the plan on Twitter.

The Turkish lira was slightly lower on Friday after the USA warned Ankara should expect more sanctions over the detention of an American evangelical pastor. He is accused of having links to a group that Ankara says was behind the coup.

Other emerging market currencies, such as Russia's ruble and Mexico's peso, also rose.

The turmoil has raised fears of a looming economic crisis in Turkey and prompted alarm that foreign investors in the country, including Qatar, could be hit in the fallout.
