Whitmer and Schuette Win Michigan Governor’s Nominations

Schuette and Whitmer - both veteran officeholders - easily bested their opponents in Tuesday's primary to set up their head-to-head race to succeed Republican Gov. Rick Snyder, who reached his term limit.

Schuette has long fashioned himself after Trump, and he soared in polling once receiving the endorsement of the president.

Former Democratic legislative leader Gretchen Whitmer and Republican state Attorney General Bill Schuette won the nominations for MI governor on Tuesday, besting five other candidates who were also vying to succeed term-limited GOP Gov. Rick Snyder.

"There is tremendous intensity among Democratic women to participate in the election", said Bernie Porn, a pollster with EPIC-MRA in Lansing who attributed the surge to a backlash against Trump. In suburban Detroit's 11th District, GOP businesswoman Lena Epstein and Democrat Haley Stevens were leading the fields to follow a retiring Republican congressman.

After polling closed in the four states, women broke records for gubernatorial and House nominations, according to the BBC. But the Secretary of State's office told voters to stay in line - everyone who was in line by 8:00 p.m. was allowed to vote. Turnout numbers posted online only go back 40 years.

Whitmer would not be Michigan's first female governor, nor has she made the anti-Trump resistance movement a centerpiece of her campaign, instead focusing on issues such as road repairs, school funding and water. Many wondered whether her debate challenge was also "catcalling". "When you've got a Legislature that's so male, all the leaders making decisions around our health care being white males. you get the policies that we have here in MI".

"Women leaders use our platforms and our power to make sure that we are being representative, that we are making decisions with all voices around the table", Whitmer said. "They told me that a message of health care, education and housing stability wouldn't be welcome here". But according to reports, the race was still too close to call, in a safe Republican seat held by them since 1983.

Near the end of the discussion, Goodman asked the 28-year-old candidate, "are you still for a two-state solution with Israel and Palestine?" "The people who are supportive of the president are very supportive, they're very enthusiastic", said Anderson, adding that the GOP also will have to appeal to independent swing voters.

Republicans say they expected higher Democratic turnout.

The Democratic candidate for governor is a former leader of the Senate Democrats, Gretchen Whitmer.

Then came Rep. Tom Perriello's loss in Virginia's gubernatorial primary, and in June, the drubbing in Iowa of Pete D'Alessandro, a top adviser to Sanders during his 2016 Iowa caucus campaign.

"I don't believe there are red states or blue states or purple states", he said during his 30-minute speech.
