Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing to have tie-ins to Trump

Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing to have tie-ins to Trump

In a dozen years as a federal judge and 300-some opinions to his credit, Judge Brett Kavanaugh sees his job as calling constitutional "balls and strikes"; Shannon Bream looks at President Trump's pick to replace Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. Add Supreme Court as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Supreme Court news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Senate Democrat, said in an interview aired on "Fox News Sunday" that the White House's citation of privilege on the documents was the first time that had occurred. President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh, officiates at the swearing-in of Judge Britt Grant to take a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in Atlanta at the U.S. District Courthouse in Washington.

Democrats have tried - unsuccessfully - to delay the Kavanaugh hearings, citing everything from Michael Cohen accusing Trump of criminal wrongdoing in court to the White House's decision to withhold 100,000 pages of records from Kavanaugh's service in the George W. Bush White House.

"We're witnessing a Friday night document massacre", Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote on Twitter on Saturday, a nod to Richard Nixon's 1973 "Saturday Night Massacre" during the Watergate scandal.

The documents in question, he wrote, "reflect deliberations and candid advice concerning the selection and nomination of judicial candidates, the confidentiality of which is critical to any president's ability to carry out this core constitutional executive function".

The Presidential Records Act allows both the former administration and the current White House to claim privilege on presidential documents.

Republicans shot back, saying they offered committee Democrats waivers in order to view the documents and only one - Minnesota Sen.

Democrats seemed to realize they are fighting a losing battle after attacks on the judge's personal finances and his activities while in the Bush White House fell short.

No land mines have been found in the hundreds of thousands of pages already available to the public, and Republicans said they have made the confidential documents available to all senators.

"I think that you could ask some very interesting questions about these documents that I'm unable to even say, because I'm not able to make them public", Klobuchar said on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday.

"The Democrats have more than enough information to understand that this is a highly qualified jurist that should be the next Supreme Court justice", said Republican Sen.

He said Senate Republicans and Trump "are colluding to keep".

The opinion that Roe v. Wade is "settled law" doesn't mean it can't be overturned by the Supreme Court, Sen.
