Colin Kaepernick becomes the face of Nike’s ‘Just Do It’ ad campaign

Colin Kaepernick becomes the face of Nike’s ‘Just Do It’ ad campaign

Nike on Monday revealed former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick as the face of its 30th Anniversary "Just Do It" Campaign, almost two years after Kaepernick knelt during the National Anthem to protest racial injustice in America, setting off a polarizing movement across the U.S.

The quarterback began protesting racial injustice and police brutality in August 2016 by sitting during the national anthem.

In addition to Kaepernick, Odell Beckham Jr., Shaquem Griffin, Lacey Baker, Serena Williams and LeBron James are part of Nike's 30th Anniversary "Just Do It" campaign.

Not unexpectedly, the ad also also sparked more negative reactions from various folks online; all you need to do is go through Kaepernick's mentions to get a glimpse at some of those responses. But the new ad honoring Kaepernick is the first Nike has rolled out of the player since 2016, which is the a year ago the former quarterback played in the league.

The move came during the 2016 National Football League season and was created to draw attention to racism and police brutality.

The new ad, which Kaepernick shared on social media Monday afternoon, features the message: "Believe in something".

Kaepernick posted the advert from his Twitter account on Monday followed by "JustDoIt".

But the league and union put that on hold after the Miami Dolphins faced backlash for classifying the protests as conduct potentially detrimental to the team - putting players at risk of fines or suspensions.

In June, Trump cancelled the visit of the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles to the White House after several players indicated they would not attend. They even came up with and announced a new national anthem policy earlier this offseason, but the move was swiftly criticized.

As ESPN reported, "Kaepernick's contract was originally supposed to keep him with the Niners through 2020, but the team worked with the 29-year-old to revamp it before he reclaimed the starting job in October".

Nike is a corporate sponsor with the NFL.
