Lexus ES will be first mirrorless production auto

Lexus ES will be first mirrorless production auto

Lexus will offer the world's first* Digital Outer Mirrors to be equipped on a mass-produced vehicle.

Lexus calls the system Digital Side-View Monitors and the images each camera captures are beamed to 5-inch display monitors located inside the cabin.

The technology will debut in the redesigned ES sedan that goes on sale in October.

Of course, the Lexus isn't the only auto we've seen lately to use cameras to replace wing mirrors, but the new ES has beaten the Audi E-tron to market by quite a distance.

Lexus has become the first automaker to replace door-mounted mirrors with cameras in a series-produced vehicle.

Besides giving drivers a better view of their surroundings, Lexus claims that another advantage of having digital side monitors is that they no longer block the view outside the front windows. The Japan-market ES will be the first to offer the tech as an option, but we presume it will roll out to other Lexus and Toyota models as well.

Of course, this system also allows for slim and futuristic looking "side mirrors" that provide better forward visibility and the reduction of wind noise, due to their smaller surface area.

The Japanese manufacturer says the digital mirrors are specifically shaped to "resist the accumulation of raindrops and snow, leaving the driver's view unaffected". The cameras even automatically adjust their field of focus when a turn signal is activated, or the vehicle is put into reverse.
