Meghan McCain contrasts father’s legacy with Trump’s ‘cheap rhetoric’

While Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner attended US Senator John McCain's memorial service on Saturday, her father and stepmother were noticeably absent from the proceedings.

Meghan McCain, who has made no secret of her unhappiness with Trump's criticism of her father, kicked off a memorial service that was attended by a who's who crowd of Democratic and Republican leaders who gathered to celebrate the former war prisoner's life. "The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again, because America was always great". He was a great American. The animosity between Mr McCain and Mr Trump had been mutual, and they clashed often.

During his campaign, the President said McCain was not a war hero because he was captured in Vietnam and he declined to release a statement marking his death. McCain will be laid to rest there along the Severn in a private Sunday service. John called us to be bigger than that.

Although Trump did not attend, his specter was still present at the funeral in the words of McCain's daughter, as well as in mentions by former presidents Obama and Bush, who all made note of the sitting president without stating his name, as McCain undoubtedly would have preferred.

"It's a politics that pretends to be fearless and tough but in fact is born in fear". Conspicuously absent was Republican president Donald Trump.

For years Trump feuded publicly with McCain and mocked his military service, continuing to knock him even after he grew ill. John McCain, at National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018.

The private ceremony in Annapolis, Maryland, was as carefully planned as the rest of McCain's farewell tour, which began in Arizona after he died August 25 from brain cancer and stretched to Washington.

By all accounts, McCain ended up liking both Bush and Obama but was not especially close to either man. Defense Secretary James Mattis and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, a retired Marine Corps general, accompanied the McCain family to the war memorial.

Meghan McCain's eyes appeared to snap on Pence during his remarks. "He called us to be better than that", he added.

"This week's celebration of the life and values and patriotism of this hero, I think have taken our country above all that", he said.

Barack Obama, meanwhile, said he and McCain "didn't advertise it", but they would meet nearly weekly in the Oval Office to talk about policy and also their families.

Funeral services for former presidents have been held at the National Cathedral since 1901, according to its website. "And even that small number still have the opportunity, as long as they draw breath, to live up to the example of John McCain".

Trump and McCain's contentious relationship worsened after the self-described "maverick" voted down a bill that would have repealed large swaths of Obama's Affordable Care Act.

"An old man shook off a scars of battle one last time and arose a new man to pilot one last flight", she said through deep sobs. "You could disagree on substance", Biden said.

"Back", McCain wrote on the last page of his recent memoir, "where it began".
