Nadal sets up semi-final clash with Del Potro

Nadal sets up semi-final clash with Del Potro

World number one Nadal had only lost a set 6-0 at a grand slam on three previous occasions - the 2015 Australian Open, 2006 Wimbledon and the 2004 US Open - but that changed against rampant ninth seed Thiem in the opening set on Tuesday.

World number one Nadal saw off a battling Nikoloz Basilashvili, the first Georgian in a fourth round in NY, 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-4.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Nadal came from a set down to get past Thiem 0-6 6-4 7-5 6-7 (4) 7-6 (5) and set up a semi-final meeting against third-seeded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina.

Thiem, energized after extending the match, held serve to start the set, while Nadal had brushed off the signs of discouragement from the end of the fourth.

At Wimbledon, Nadal came back from two sets to one down to win in five in a quarter-final which stretched to nearly five hours.

"Thank you very much everybody for staying here tonight", Nadal said after the four hour, 49 minute marathon.

Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams were both tested on their way to the quarter-finals of the US Open. Of course, my level dropped a little bit.

In a battle between two gladiators, bot of whom refused to give up, World No. 1 and defending champion Rafael Nadal emerged unscathed, but not before he and Dominic Thiem gave the world a delectable display of high-quality tennis.

"If we skip the first set, it was a really open match from beginning to the end".

"If he decides to stand far back, Rafa will be thinking "yum yum, I can get my forehand into play".

Asked about that at his news conference, Thiem said with a chuckle: "Well, I don't think he's really sorry".

And Thiem, the only man to beat Nadal on clay for the last two seasons, set about showing his opponent he meant serious business in his first grand slam quarter-final outside of the French Open. He always plays with - plays and practices with a great attitude and sad for him because when arrives this moment, he did all the things well to win the match.

"It was physically demanding because the conditions were tough out there, too". But when he came out to serve for the set at 5-4, the Austrian was visibly hesitant, Nadal bounded behind the baseline.

When someone urged her to raise her level in the second set, Stephens replied, "I'm trying!"

"He will say "this is my opportunity and I'm expected to lose, but I have to go out there guns blazing".

Nadal has played a total of 15 hours, 54 minutes through five matches here. "It's good to have now two days (without a match) that probably give me the chance to be 100 percent in the semi-finals". Within the quarterfinals, the Tandil native defeated American John Isner with a rating of 6:7 (5:7), 6:three, 7:6 (7:four), 6:2.
