Small air leak in Russian capsule patched at space station

Small air leak in Russian capsule patched at space station

Space is a rare area of cooperation, and NASA crews have been sent to the ISS aboard Russian Soyuz capsules since 2011.

Flight controllers at NASA Mission Control Center in Houston worked with their Russian counterparts to enable the repairs.

Now flight controllers are monitoring the cabin pressure while coming up with a better and long-term solution for the leak. Upon receiving advice from Moscow and Houston, the crew sealed the microfracture with a cloth, averting the crisis for the time being.

Back to Earth the next expedition to the global space station in April 2019 will complete the program by sending on the Russian spacecraft to the ISS, American astronauts.

Mission Control outside Moscow told the astronauts to let the sealant dry overnight and that more leak checks would be conducted Friday.

The leak was assessed as a non-emergency and the astronauts were informed upon waking up Thursday morning.

Astronauts aboard the ISS are safe and have traced the source of the leak that resulted in loss of cabin pressure, Nasa wrote in a blog post.

The European Space Agency reported crew members are in no danger, as there are weeks of air left in the ISS reserves. Flight controllers have partially replenished the atmosphere in the station by using the oxygen supply from a Russian cargo capsule.

Apart from those two, collisions with other spacecraft during docking, fires aboard the station, and toxic spills are some of the more unsafe things looming over ISS astronauts.

A Nasa spokesman said it was too early to speculate on whether the three might have to return to Earth early if the leak can not be stopped.

In the midst of the search and fix process, according to The Telegraph, NASA ground control officials reported, "Right now Alex has got his finger on that hole and I don't think that's the best remedy for it". "They travel at speeds up to 17,500 miles per hour, fast enough for a relatively small piece of orbital debris to damage a satellite or a spacecraft".
