Stunning astronaut photos show multiple hurricanes swirling in the Atlantic

"We expect a rapid intensification of Florence tomorrow", Dennis Feltgen, a spokesman for the National Hurricane Center, said on Sunday.

Hurricane Florence intensified Monday, becoming a Category 4 storm, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The consensus now expects a landfall somewhere in North Carolina, perhaps South if Florence shifts a little further.

Here's another look at the projected path showed the center of the storm hitting near the North Carolina cities of Raleigh, Charlotte, and Greensboro.

Where is the hurricane now? It was moving to the west-northwest at 9 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour.

The center of the hurricane is forecast to move across the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas tomorrow and Wednesday (Sept. 11-12), before approaching the southeastern coast of the USA on Thursday.

The NHC issued a warning Monday morning, explaining when powerful gusts may approach. As you can see, the earliest time that tropical storm winds are now expected in the Carolinas, according to the National Hurricane Center, is Wednesday night.

What else should I know?

The governors of North and SC, as well as Virginia, have declared states of emergency ahead of landfall.

"Those are the benchmark storms on the Carolina coastline, strong Category 4 hurricanes, but the difference with this is it's not going to move fast". All three states have declared states of emergency.

Camp Lejeune says in a statement that it's urging personnel to prepare now, and will open shelters on the base if necessary.

Cities in Florence's impact zone that may see winds in excess of 100 miles per hour as of Monday morning.

Hurricane Florence is poised to hit part of the East Coast this week, and the impact could be devastating.

Interests from SC through coastal Virginia should continue to pay close attention to future forecasts.

"A big question on this track is how intense the storm remains over the Research Triangle area of North Carolina - Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill", Watson said.

Hurricane Helene will likely continue to strengthen since it is in a low wind shear environment and warm waters.

Early on Monday, Sam Lillo, a University of Oklahoma meteorology student, posted this ominous video of Florence at sunrise.

The Atlantic hurricane season, which typically runs from June to November, caused more than $250 billion worth of damage in the United States in 2017.
