Trump made false claim about economy, GDP, unemployment rate: White House

Trump made false claim about economy, GDP, unemployment rate: White House

"The GDP Rate (4.2%) is higher than the Unemployment Rate (3.9%) for the first time in over 100 years!" the president said in a tweet.

Gasparino was writing in response to a tweet from Wall Street Journal columnist Kimberley Strassel.

Gross domestic product increased at a 4.2 annualized rate in the second quarter of 2018, and the unemployment rate was 3.9 percent in April, 3.8 percent in May and 4.0 percent in June.

Gasparino responded with a mix of snark and anger.

In a detailed presentation on Monday, top White House economist Kevin Hassett told reporters that the world's largest economy turned a corner in the Trump era, pointing to sharp gains in business investment, business sentiment and corporate registrations.

Fox Business' daytime anchor Neil Cavuto has called out Trump on a number of occasions when the president has bashed the "fake news" and the "swamp".

Last week, The Washington Post counted 4,713 false or misleading claims by the president since he took office ― an average of eight per day.

"What is true is that it's the highest in 10 years, and at some point somebody probably conveyed it to him adding a zero to that, and they shouldn't have done that", Hassett said.

However, Trump's bogus GDP tweet was too obvious for Fox to ignore. "We have just begun", Trump tweeted.

"Just when Hillary Clinton said she was going to start running a positive campaign, she ripped off her mask and revealed her true contempt for everyday Americans", Jason Miller, a senior communications adviser for Trump's campaign, said in a statement at the time. "What magic wand do you have?" he asked.

But economists say the truth is closer to splitting the baby: Neither president is exclusively responsible and yet both deserve some of the credit for an economic recovery that without a doubt began under Mr Obama.
