Trump slams National Football League season opener for poor ratings

Trump slams National Football League season opener for poor ratings

"You have to stand proudly for the national anthem or you shouldn't be playing, you shouldn't be there, maybe you shouldn't be in the country", Trump said during an interview with Fox News after the new policy was introduced in May.

On Sunday, President Donald Trump, who has criticized the players' demonstration in the past, again took to social media to voice his displeasure.

Their actions follow those of Kaepernick who slowly became an National Football League outcast since he began the non-violent protest against police brutality and social injustice toward African-Americans.

On Sunday, Miami Dolphins receivers Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson knelt in protest, as they did during the preseason, while defensive end Robert Quinn raised a fist.

For the Atlanta Falcons-Philadelphia Eagles season opener Thursday, ratings were down 13%, ESPN reported.

Kaepernick took to Twitter to commend Stills and Wilson, posting, "My brothers @Kstills and @ithinkisee12 continue to show their unwavering strength by fighting for the oppressed!"

Kaepernick began his protest of racial injustice during the national anthem in August 2016, joined by teammate Eric Reid shortly after. They have not backed down, even when attacked and intimidated.

At least one university, the College of the Ozarks, dropped its Nike uniforms last week in response to the ad campaign, which features a photo of Kaepernick with the caption "Believe in something. Otherwise worse!" the President wrote. Other players on other teams, including the Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers', either stayed in the locker room during the rendition of the anthem or also raised their fists.

The NFL passed a new anthem policy in May, but those rules were put on hold to allow the league and union to further discuss the issue.

However, NBC did show the anthem Thursday night (but not before Sunday night's Bears-Packers game), and no players kneeled or protested in other ways.
