Ultimate dad Barack Obama accidentally plays matchmaker at campaign event

Former US President Barack Obama on Friday gave an impassioned speech in which he railed against President Donald Trump and the Republican Party for abandoning the party's core principles and harming American democracy.

Speaking at the University of IL at Urbana-Champaign on Friday, the former president accused Trump of "capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years".

"Obama criticized Trump during a speech Friday in IL, calling the current president "the symptom, not the cause" of division and polarization in the U.S".

In a speech at the University of IL at Urbana-Champaign, Mr Obama said Americans were living in "dangerous times", urging Democrats to vote in November midterm elections to restore "honesty and decency and lawfulness" to government.

He said the problem did not start with Donald Trump, but he called him by name. He is a symptom, not the cause. "He's just capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years, a fear and anger that's rooted in our past, but it's also born out of the enormous upheavals that have taken place in your brief lifetimes".

In a now infamous comment following the clash of white supremacists and counter-protesters, which saw counter-protester Heather Heyer killed when a Nazi-sympathiser drove a auto into a crowd, Mr Trump said there were "some very fine people on both sides".

"This is one of those pivotal moments when every one of us as citizens of the United States need to determine just who we are, what it is that we stand for", Obama told a mostly student audience of about 1,300 at the University of IL at Urbana-Champaign.

Analysts say Obama's post-presidential star status among Democrats will help drive turnout among African-American, Latino and young voters in key suburban House districts and cities.

Obama says "What happened to the Republican Party?".

"When you hear how great the economy's doing right now, let's just remember when this recovery started", he said.

America, Obama argued, has been through similar trials before - two steps forward in progress followed by a step back, with ebbs and flows throughout history.

And after Obama's speech, one of them came from Matt Drudge-who tweeted, "Democrats lost 76 House seats and 15 Senate seats during Obama's terms". His work has also appeared in Salon, Raw Story, Truthdig, National Memo, Philadelphia Weekly, Democratic Underground, L.A. Weekly, MintPress News and many other publications.

Republicans shrugged off Mr Obama's criticism.

The CEO of Civic Advisors and the CEO of the "When We All Vote" initiative is the same person -- Kyle Lierman, who worked in the Obama White House for then Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett.

In his speech, Obama criticized the divisive politics of the Trump era, decrying attacks on the freedom of the press, the justice system, and numerous other controversies.

He very bluntly slated Trump for not condemning the racially-charged protests, saying: "How hard can that be, saying that Nazis are bad?" Ben Ray Lujan, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said in a statement.

"There is only one check on abuses of power, and that's you and your vote".

"Democrats may have a new resistor-in-chief on the campaign trail, but they'll need more than a message of resist and obstruct to win this November".

Trump told supporters in Montana on Thursday that Republicans needed to maintain control of Congress to stave off possible impeachment proceedings against him, although Democrats have played down any discussion of that approach. "And that's you - you and your vote". "That's the only way it could happen", Trump told a Montana rally.
