USA senators question Kavanaugh about his record and legal positions

"I am deeply honored to be nominated to fill his seat on the Supreme Court", Kavanaugh said as Trump announced his nomination at the White House July 9.

The panel's top Democrat, Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, whether a president can be required to respond to a subpoena, Kavanaugh said, "I can't give you an answer on that hypothetical question".

And Republicans say Kavanaugh's hundreds of public rulings while serving as a judge provide plenty of evidence about the way he would behave as a Supreme Court justice. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) demanded.

As protesters repeatedly interrupted the session, Republican Sen.

Unlike Tuesday when Hatch became frustrated with demonstrators, the senator ignored a woman yelling as he asked questions.

Senator Ben Sasse used his time to say how much he was exhausted of the theatrics and "patently absurd" criticisms that had been lobbed at Kavanaugh that he claimed were not based on truth or even anything to do with the nominee but rooted in misdirected political fervor. Senate Democratic leaders have vowed a fierce fight to try to block his confirmation.

Republicans have said that Democrats have more than enough documents to assess Kavanaugh's record, including his 12 years of judicial opinions as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Kavanaugh looked utterly confused by Harris' line of questioning.

"It's that president who's decided you are his man", Durbin said.

He said he understood the importance of the precedent in the landmark 1973 case, Roe v Wade, which legalised abortion nationwide, pointing out it had been reaffirmed by the Supreme Court several times.

Leahy said that the Senate Judiciary had other documents that provide even more proof that the nominee misled senators about internal Democratic documents he received, but those records are now "committee confidential", meaning they can only be viewed by members.

News photographers clicked pictures of a smiling Kavanaugh, a conservative federal appeals court judge, as he entered the hearing room along with his wife and two daughters.

Overall, 70 people were arrested Tuesday and charged with disorderly conduct on the first day of the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings. The Republicans guiding Kavanaugh know today that they have the votes to ensure his committee endorsement and a narrow majority to win in the full Senate.

"I've tried to be a very collegial judge, I've tried to be civil", he said.

In an Oval Office interview Tuesday with The Daily Caller, he called the protests "embarrassing for the country" and wondered why the disruptions were allowed to continue. "It's about protecting the most personal decisions we all make from government intrusion".

If confirmed, Kavanaugh is expected to move the court, which already had a conservative majority, further to the right.

On Wednesday, Durbin challenged Kavanaugh on the grounds that the girl had satisfied all of Texas's prerequisites to obtaining an abortion, including an ultrasound and securing a judicial bypass to parental consent requirements. He said his views did shift after the September 11, 2001, attacks but his ideas about revisiting the special counsel law were merely suggestions. They fear Kavanaugh will push the court to the right on abortion, guns and other issues, and that he will side with Trump in cases stemming from Robert Mueller's investigation of Trump's 2016 campaign.

Kavanaugh worked some five years in the Bush White House, first as legal counsel and then as staff secretary.

But Booker says he can't share the email with the nominee because it is among those that have been labelled "committee confidential" - available to senators, but not the public.

Kavanaugh, accused by Democrats of being a tool for big corporations and a foe of the little guy, wasted little time in trying to humanize himself Wednesday. "I do not believe that's consistent" with the way prior nominations have been handled. "And as you well recall, Senator I know when that case came up the Supreme Court didn't just reaffirm it in passing, the court specifically went through all the factors of stare decisis in considering whether to overrule it".
