Watergate's Woodward says 'Times' Trump op-ed not up to his standards

Watergate's Woodward says 'Times' Trump op-ed not up to his standards

Despite Sanders' efforts to downplay the bombshell op-ed, Cooper said the "dust hasn't even begun to settle" as it is "not every day an administration official writes 'the root of the problem is the president's amorality'".

The Politico/Morning Consult poll found that 61 percent of voters think the administration is chaotic, while 32 percent believe it is running well.

Several administration officials, including Defense Secretary James Mattis and chief of staff John Kelly, have denied the anecdotes and quotes ascribed to them in Woodward's book.

Mr. Woodward's latest book - Fear: Trump in the White House - hit the market on Tuesday.

In "Fear", Woodward claims Trump accused Christie of "stealing" from him while he was assisting on the presidential campaign trail, notes The Hill.

Lozada: Well, he wrote two books on Obama and four books on Bush, so it might be a little early to compare his Trump book to his work on both those presidents.

Later on during the interview, Woodward put Guthrie on the spot, when she questioned him about specific portions of his book. As he did with "Deep Throat" on Watergate, Woodward based his reporting in Fear on "deep background" interviews, sharing all available information without revealing the identity of his sources.

Before he left, though, he had an oversized role in the White House, with Trump at one point telling Porter that he should report to him directly and not to then-Chief of Staff Reince Priebus.

"One key person who's in office called me and said, "Everyone knows what you said here is true".

"Thank God the tweet did not go out", said Woodward, who described it as another example of Trump's "back-of-the-envelope policymaking" that eventually led to Kelly sending out a memo affirming these "fly-by-night" decisions would no longer be considered final, instead requiring formal documents signed by the president. If I did I would not have been elected President.

Indeed, the op-ed and the book both hammer home almost identical points about Trump's need for adult supervision, his penchant to do things at the spur of the moment, without being "derailed by forethought", his unsafe and impulsive inclinations, and so on.

Woodward says his sources' denials are driven by "political necessity", and are a product of the way Washington generally runs. "Never has a country given so much away for so little in return" as the USA had in Afghanistan, Modi had said to Trump, according to The Washington Post.

Mr Mattis also issued a statement, re-tweeted at least twice by Mr Trump, saying, "The contemptuous words about the president attributed to me in Woodward's book were never uttered by me or in my presence".

"I think in our business, at times, we are cheating the public".
