Freedom4 pretending to offer WiMax
Posted by matt-dean in Latest Broadband News on February 19, 2009
For many years Freedom4 has provided a quality service to UK residents by coordinating availability of paid WiFi hotspots. Travelers throughout the UK are able to tab into local paid WiFi networks through a common key of Freeedom4. Because providers such as BT are always looking for new subscribers they did not mind paying a fair commission to Freedom4 for the lend of their clients. Of late Freedom has been attempting to position themselves as a fully independent broadband service provider.
This is being done under the auspices of WiMax. Freedom 4 claims to provide powerful WiMax coverage and service in several UK cities. Using a generic conotation of Wimax freedom4 states that WiMax is any licensed broadcast of WiFi connectivity as opposed to the technical thinking of WiMax as the next generation of wireless internet via infrastructure that does not yet exist.
This is akin to using two cans and a string and calling it a telephone. Average speeds for Freedom4 faux Wimax are half you would receive from every other major UK internet provider. In fact the speed provided is just about the same as received with a 3G aircard. And the portability of those is irrefutable.
