Is Fibre to the home the future of broadband

These days it is hard to turn on the news or read a paper without hearing something about the rollout of super fast broadband throughout the country, but it has to be said that the rollout that we are experiencing at this moment in time is not quite the real deal. of course, fibre optic connections are being made throughout the country, but at the moment the companies who are dealing with the rollout are only delivering fibre optics to the cabinets, and delivery from this point to the house is through traditional copper wires, which can only slow the connection down.

Recent speculation has indicated that the future of our broadband in this country is likely to be fibre to the home, which would obviously mean a much faster connection for all. The only problem with this idea of course is that the cost of implementing this sort of thing could be incredibly expensive. It is actually something that is possible to have at the moment, but at present, it is far too expensive for most people to consider.

Recently there has been a next generation summit meeting in Europe, and interestingly, a lot of issues were raised to question the benefit of going for a fibre to the home rollout in the future. As far as Britain are concerned there are plenty of questions that we have to ask before we even consider something like this. It may turn out that there are better options out there such as having a fibre close to the home, rather than directly to the home. You have to begin to question just how quick we need the internet to be. Fibre to the cabinet is going to mean the ability to download video files of significant length in just seconds, which is likely to be adequate for most people.

It will be interesting to see how things develop, but for most people, the new super fast broadband rollout will be sufficient in terms of speed for some time to come.
