Prime Minister states his belief that broadband holds the key to UK growth

Prime Minister David Cameron has labelled the government’s plans for super-fast broadband as one of his “big plans” aimed at transforming and improving the UK’s infrastructure, a move he believes will return the economy to growth.

In his new year message, Cameron acknowledged that “much needs to change” if the British economy is to be brought back to a state where growth is a possibility. Government sponsored rolling out of super-fast broadband, new homes being built around the country plus improved roads and railways will all contribute to the achieving of this goal.

Mr Cameron said: “This will be the year Britain sees the world and the world sees Britain. It must be the year we go for it – the year the coalition government I lead does everything it takes to get our country up to strength. I profoundly believe that we can turn these things around.”

The coalition government has been extremely vocal in promoting its aim to get Britain connected to the best super-fast broadband network in Europe by the end of 2015, although as yet they have failed to specify an exact target. The plan is to give every home and business in the UK access to super-fast broadband & phone packages.

To achieve this goal, the government has set aside £530 million of funds to help with the installation of faster broadband services in areas of the UK that private telecoms companies will not take responsibility for, having deemed them ‘not economically viable’.

The Countryside Alliance criticised the government’s broadband plan in December, revealing that although four rural areas were chosen to pilot the super-fast broadband scheme, as of the end of 2011, not one had actually started work on the new network.

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt recently announced a deadline for local authorities to apply for funding, in a bid to get the initiative rolling.

Fixed broadband connection to supply Rural Burghill

Getting reasonably high speed broadband to rural spots in the country is a significant problem at the moment, and despite the widespread news regarding the rollout of super fast broadband across the country at the moment, it is still something that is causing somewhat of a headache for both potential consumers and suppliers.

The main problem of course is money. the cost of supplying super fast fibre optic lines is relative to the amount of homes it can service, and with homes being few and far between in some rural areas, it makes it a difficult thing to be able to do.

That being said, one lucky village in a remote spot of Herefordshire is soon to have an acceptable connection speed thanks to a fixed broadband connection. Allpay are distributing the service, which is achieved by the placement of the companies wireless kit at the top of a church, which is then beamed throughout the area. Depending on the package that consumers decide to go for, they will be able to achieve speeds of between 2Mbps and 35Mbps.

This is not the first case of this sort of instalment for this ISP, with the villages of Madley, Brilley, The Bage and Peterchurch already benefiting from a similar set up. It’s great news for places like this and perhaps a positive step for places that feel they may be out of reach of super fast broadband for some time.

The prices for the scheme start from £20 per month, which is roughly in line with other services that have sprung up over the last few months.

Hilton Hotels team up with BT to increase

The world famous hotel chain Hilton has decided to get together with BT openzone in an attempt to improve their wifi and fixed line web access in many of their hotels. Once this change has been put into place, around 100 Hilton hotels, which will include around 17,000 bedrooms as well as the many meeting rooms and public areas that the hotels have to offer.

It will mean the most for guests who have the Hilton Prestige membership packages, who will be able to take advantage of the boosted connectivity that will be on offer, and of course anyone who has an existing BT openzone deal will be able to take advantage too. Hilton’s Robert Webb had this to sayon the subject:

“We are committed to providing our guests with access to the very latest technology, complementing our world class hospitality, and are delighted to collaborate with BT openzone to deliver an outstanding service in the U.K. and Ireland. This deal builds on last year’s agreement with AT&T in the United States and Canada as we look to partner with the very best technology providers around the world.”

This obviously shows the commitment in place from Hilton, but it is not much help to those people who are not with BT or who do not have a Hilton Loyalty card.

Obviously it can lead you to want to find out more about the offers available through BT, and it is worth checking online to see if they can beat what you are currently getting from your current provider.

It is of course important to look online to find out what is on offer, and at the moment there are some great BT spring deals which might mean that you can take advantage of these hotel offers. It is important that you use the review sites online to make sure you are going to get a good connection as well as a good price.
